The waiting is finally over. The elite European competition, the Champions League, is starting. In one of the most interesting matches of the first day, the reigning champions, Real Madrid, will meet Bundesliga vice-champion Stuttgart.
Last season, Real Madrid won their 15th Champions League title. Pundits see Carlo Ancelotti's team again as one of the favorites to lift the trophy. However, the road in the redesigned Champions League could be harder than ever as the teams will have two games more before the knockout phase.
Real Madrid started the 2024/25 season with an expected win in the UEFA Super Cup against Atalanta and eight points in four La Liga games. Real Madrid is unbeaten, but the legendary Ancelotti is probably unsatisfied as they dropped points against Mallorca and Las Palmas.
Stuttgart haven't been part of the Champions League since the 2009/10 season. In their return, Sebastian Hoeness' team is hardly among the best teams, but realistically, Stuttgart could compete for the place in the 1/16 final.
Stuttgart's start to the 2024/25 season was far from satisfying, as they won only one of four matches in all competitions. In the previous game, they played 3-3 at home against Mainz. Hoeness' team finished the game with a phenomenal xG of 5.21, but their bad defense cost them points again.
Real Madrid vs Stuttgart pick: Real Madrid to win and cover AH -1.5 spread
Real Madrid dropped some points in La Liga, but in two home matches, they collected six points with a 5:0 goal difference. On the other hand, Stuttgart have too many problems in defense, so we should expect Ancelotti's team to win and cover AH -1.5 spread.
Real Madrid team news
The season has only started, but Real Madrid already have big problems with injuries. Aurelien Tchouameni, Ferland Mandy, Daniel Ceballos, Jesus Vallejo, Jude Bellingham, and Eduardo Camavinga are all injured. The silver lining is that all six players are expected to return to the pitch in September. Additionally, there's more good news as David Alaba has resumed training after recovering from an ACL injury.

Stuttgart team news
Stuttgart have even bigger problems with missing players than Real Madrid. The Bundesliga side will be without Yannik Keitel, Anthony Rouault, Leonidas Stergiou, Nikolas Nartey, and Dan-Axel Zagadou are injured. The excellent news for Stuttgart is that although Luca Raimund and Pascal Stenzel are injured, they should recover until the game against Real Madrid.
